3M Scotch® 4740 tape is a high-performance solution for fine-line masking in demanding paint applications. It is specially designed for jobs requiring precision, such as two-tone painting in the automotive sector, and stands out for its excellent conformability and heat resistance. Thanks to its solvent-free acrylic adhesive, it offers a secure hold without lifting and peels off cleanly, leaving crisp, professional paint lines. 

CARACTERÍSTICAS

- High conformability: Its polyolefin backing (PVC-free) adapts perfectly to complex surfaces, steep curves, recessed areas and irregular contours, ensuring instant and firm adhesion.

- Heat resistance: Withstands multiple baking cycles, up to 160 °C for 60 minutes or 180 °C for 10 minutes, without compromising performance.

- Clean removal: The high-temperature acrylic adhesive removes cleanly, leaving no residue at the edges or ghosting, offering one of the best performances on most surfaces.

- Solvent-free technology: Its water-based adhesive significantly reduces solvent use (by up to 80% compared with similar previous versions), making it more environmentally friendly and efficient.

- Approximate total thickness: 0.13 mm, offering a good balance between flexibility and durability.

- Available widths: 12, 19, 25, 30 mm or customisable.

APPLICATIONS

- This tape is primarily designed for two-tone paint masking in the automotive OEM, specialist vehicle and aerospace sectors. It is ideal for creating crisp separation lines on bumpers, bodywork and parts with simple or complex patterns. Its ability to withstand high temperatures makes it perfect for industrial painting processes involving baking, where other tapes might lift or leave marks. 

- It is also used for the temporary protection of metal, painted, plastic or rubber surfaces. In professional bodywork and paint shops, it helps to achieve premium-quality finishes, minimising rework caused by masking errors, such as paint bleed or adhesive residue.
